DES MOINES, Iowa - A Clarion man was having fun playing some instant-scratch tickets with a friend when he won a $10,000 top-prize playing the lottery's "Great State Tailgate" game.

James Stock, 48, was scratching tickets with a buddy at Kum & Go, 300 Central Ave. W. in Clarion. He said they were taking turns playing different tickets, and the Great State Tailgate ticket was the last one he scratched.

"I scratched it off and I thought, 'Man I had to have scratched that wrong.' So I took it to the self-checker and it said, 'This is a $10,000 winner!'"

Stock said his friend had a hard time believing it at first.

"He said, 'You're full of baloney.' And he walked over and looked at it and he said, 'You're not kidding are you?'" Stock said. "So I did a rain dance hoopla and celebrated."

Stock said the clerk who sold him the ticket got to validated it for him; Stock said it was exciting because he knew the clerk well, too. Stock has also told a few family members about his big win.

"I said, 'I'm just so excited I can't hold it in,'" Stock said.

Stock, who is a custodian for a hospital, said he plans to save some of his winnings and plans to have some fun as well.

Stock claimed his prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City.
