Melissa and Wayne Lowrey Win $10,000 Prize In 'Lifetime Riches' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Muscatine couple had a lot of celebrating to do after winning a $10,000 prize playing the lottery's "Lifetime Riches" instant-scratch game just days after their wedding anniversary.
Melissa Lowrey, 33, said she and her husband, Wayne, enjoy playing the lottery every now and then but never expected to win big.
"The first ticket was the $10,000 winner," she said. "So he came home Saturday and handed me the ticket and said, 'Happy anniversary!'"
The couple's anniversary had been just four days prior to the win. Lowrey said she was surprised to see her husband come through the door that Saturday because he should've been on his way to work, but she's glad he came back home.
"When I saw it, I saw the printout that the gas station had given him," Lowrey said. "I was trying to count the zeros and I said, 'Is that what I think it is?' I couldn't get back to sleep after that."
Lowrey joked that Wayne will have to start thinking about next year's anniversary gift now to top this one. She said she's also told her parents about the big win.
"Everyone says, 'It's about time you get some good news!'" she said.
Lowrey said she and Wayne have a few ideas for what they might do with their winnings.
"We have lots of ideas, but we'll probably do something boring and practical," she said.
