DES MOINES, Iowa - An Elkader man was expecting a winner's receipt that said $5,000, but instead learned he'd won a $50,000 prize playing the lottery's "Holiday Bonus Crossword" instant-scratch game.

Bill Rodman, 48, said he scratched his ticket at The Store, 200 W. Bridge St. in Elkader, where he purchased it. A friend was with him when he discovered what he thought was a $5,000 prize.

"I was shaking so bad," Rodman said. "I just thought it was pretty awesome."

Rodman said he loves the regular Crossword ticket as well, so that led to his purchase of the Holiday Bonus Crossword game. Rodman said his friend was very excited as well.

"We do a lot of sharing, so he's pretty excited because he's going to get a piece of it," Rodman said.

Rodman said he's also told his wife and children about the win.

"They only believed me because I showed them the ticket," he said.

Rodman claimed his prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He said he plans to use some of his winnings to purchase gifts for his family for the holidays, as well as pay bills.
