DES MOINES, Iowa - Two Urbandale couples who have been playing Powerball together for a couple of years have some extra holiday cheer after winning a $200,000 prize in Saturday's drawing.
Debra and Jerry Wylie and Paul and Patty Schlotterback have been friends for years, and a couple years ago decided to start pooling their money for Powerball tickets. They never dreamed they'd win this big, though.
"I was outside taking my Christmas lights off my house," Paul Schlotterback, 56, said. "And my neighbor told me there was a $200,000 Powerball winner where we buy our tickets."
The Schlotterbacks called the Wylies, who were visiting family in Missouri, to ask where Debra had purchased the tickets. She confirmed it was the store Schlotterback had heard about, and when they checked their numbers they found a match.
"Debby called me back and could hardly talk," Paul said. "We had the numbers!"
The two couples had only told their children and parents about the big win when they claimed the prize Tuesday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. They said a few people didn't believe them.
"Word will get out, I'm sure," Jerry Wylie, 56, said.
Debra purchased the winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 8601 Douglas Ave. in Urbandale.
The Wylies had been out of town when they discovered the win, so they were anxious to get in to claim the prize.
"I didn't get much sleep last night," Debra Wylie, 56, said. "I hid the ticket in my suitcase and then kept my purse with me at all times. I kept checking it!"
Neither couple has decided how to use their winnings yet, but Patty Schlotterback, 55, had an interesting family story to tell.
Five years ago, Patty's brother won the exact same prize, $200,000 playing Powerball, a few days before Christmas.
"In the same week, just five years apart, we both won the same prize," Patty said. "We were in shock when he won and I thought the odds of another one of us winning were slim to none. He was playing the same way, too, with close friends!"
The two couples are thankful to have a lot of lottery luck floating around them, and said they'll continue to play.
The winning numbers in the $128.8 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Saturday were: 14-16-30-51-52 and Powerball 19. The Power Play® multiplier was 2. The couples won a $200,000 prize by matching the first five numbers but missing the Powerball. Had they added the Power Play to their ticket, they would have instantly won a $1 million prize.
There was one jackpot winner in Saturday's drawing, from a ticket purchased in Maryland.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot) up to five times. The cost is $1 per play. The Power Play number, 2 through 5, is chosen at the beginning of the drawing indicating the amount prizes (except the jackpot) will be multiplied if that number is drawn.
Players who choose the Power Play and match five white balls (regularly a $200,000 prize) win an instant $1 million.
