DES MOINES, Iowa - A Preemption, Ill. man used his $7 Powerball® winnings to purchase a "Great State Tailgate" instant-scratch ticket and ended up winning a top prize of $10,000.
Joseph Colley, 44, stopped by M & 5N, 1800 S. B Ave. in Nevada on his way home from working at Tires Plus in Ankeny.
"I had actually worked a 12-hour shift and needed some coffee," Colley explained. "I used my $7 to pay for my coffee and said, 'Give me that Great State Tailgate ticket too.'"
Colley stuck the ticket in his pocket and didn't scratch it for a few days. But when he did, he got the shock of his life.
"I just kind of looked at it and looked at it," he said. "Before I did anything else, I took it to work and showed it to my store manager."
Colley used one of the lottery's self-check scanners to validate his ticket. The first person he told was his fiancé, Tracey Nagle.
"We were both just laughing. You know, I just really can't describe it," Colley said.
Colley said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills as well as purchase some new furniture.
Colley claimed his prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
