Clarion Man Wins $200,000 Powerball® Prize Playing Own Numbers

Forest Knight Wins Big Prize in Wednesday's Powerball Drawing

Forest Knight   Hear Forest tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Clarion man said he's grateful for winning a $200,000 Powerball prize, because he almost missed out on getting his numbers for Wednesday's drawing.

Forest Knight, 77, said he's been playing his own numbers for a long time, but has only been playing the set of numbers that won him the prize for about six weeks.

"My play slip wouldn't go through, so I told the clerk, 'Oh, just forget it then. I believe I won't play this time,'" Knight said. "But I got to thinking about it, and I made out a new one with the same numbers and it went through."

Knight woke up Thursday morning to find the numbers he'd played had matched all five white balls, winning him a $200,000 prize.

"I couldn't believe the numbers that I had," Knight said. "I went to Webster City and had them check it and she said, 'Oh, you have a winner!'"

Knight said he finished his day of work before claiming his prize at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City Thursday. Knight is a full-time public transit bus driver for special needs people in Wright County.

At the time Knight claimed his prize, he was the only person who knew he had won. But he did have plans to tell his two sons, Bradley and Scott Knight. Knight joked about how he might use his winnings.

"It's really cold out, and I could use a new pair of shoes," he said with a laugh. "But really, I don't have any plans for it yet."

The winning numbers in Wednesday's $54.4 million Powerball jackpot drawing were: 5-19-29-45-47 and Powerball 25. The Power Play®: multiplier was 2. Knight won a $200,000 prize by matching all five white balls but missing the Powerball. If he had added the Power Play to his ticket, Knight would have won an automatic $1 million prize.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched five white balls won an instant $1 million. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match five white balls win an automatic $2 million prize.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
