Cedar Rapids Woman Buys Ticket On A Whim, Wins $10,000 Lottery Prize

Jackie Anderson Claims Prize from Oct. 15 Hot Lotto® Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids woman was visiting family when she decided to purchase a Hot Lotto ticket on a whim and ended up winning a $10,000 prize.

Jackie Anderson, 44, said she doesn't play Hot Lotto very often, so she was surprised when she won.

"I was kind of shocked," Anderson said. "My husband didn't believe me at first either."

Anderson said she knew she was the winner shortly after the Oct. 15 drawing, but wanted to wait until the New Year to claim her prize. She claimed her prize Jan. 11 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"We're going to get stuff paid off and take a vacation," Anderson said. "In three weeks we're going to Jamaica."

Anderson, who is head teller at a bank in Cedar Rapids, said her family and friends didn't believe her at first, but she had the ticket to prove it.

The winning numbers in the $6.3 million Hot Lotto jackpot drawing on Oct. 15 were: 8-14-19-34-37 and Hot Ball 16. Anderson matched the five white balls but missed the Hot Ball to win a $10,000 prize. Had she added the Sizzler® option to her ticket, Anderson would have multiplied her $10,000 win by three to win a $30,000 prize. There was no jackpot winner for the Oct. 15 drawing.

Hot Lotto players choose five numbers from a pool of 39 and another number, called the Hot Ball, from a pool of 19. The Hot Lotto jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until someone wins it. Tickets in the game cost $1. Hot Lotto drawings are held at about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, just before the Powerball drawings.

Players can multiply their non-jackpot prizes by three with the Hot Lotto Sizzler option. The cost is $1 per play. Prizes are always tripled with the Hot Lotto Sizzler.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
