DES MOINES, Iowa - A Monticello man was following his normal morning routine of scratching a "Super Crossword" scratch ticket before work when he discovered he'd won a top prize of $50,000.
Ron Sternhagen, 41, said he always gets to work a little early to get a good parking spot, so he sometimes spends a few minutes scratching a Crossword ticket before starting work as a drywall finisher.
"After half of the letters were gone and I started looking and told my buddy, 'I already won a hundred bucks!'" Sternhagen said.
Sternhagen continued scratching, and eventually realized he'd won a lot more than $100.
"I'm like, 'I've got to double check this. No way did this just happen,'" he said.
Sternhagen said he immediately called his wife and his parents to tell them the news.
"My wife was crying and my mom was crying," he said. "My wife didn't know whether or not to believe me. I was excited, but also kind of in shock."
Sternhagen worked a few hours before claiming his prize at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 501 S. Main St. in Monticello.
"I don't think it'll sink in until I get the money deposited and go home to figure out what we're going to do," he said.
Sternhagen said he plans to pay bills with his money and share with family.
