DES MOINES, Iowa - A Lyon County man said he initially thought his "Cash Bonanza" ticket was a non-winner, so he stuck it in a drawer and almost forgot about it; he later learned the ticket won him a top prize of $250,000.
LeRoy Kruger, 65, said he didn't realize he had a winning ticket until he checked it over a second time.
"Sunday morning I was kind of cleaning up and I ran across the ticket and checked it," he said. "And I realized it was a $250,000 winner!"
Kruger immediately told his wife, Delinda, the big news.
"She said, 'You liar!'" Kruger said with a laugh. "I'm the kind of guy to joke, though, so I can't blame her."
Kruger, who is from George, claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake.
"I just had to get it over with," he said. "We must have looked at it - oh, I don't know how many times because we couldn't believe it was real."
Kruger took the ticket back to Casey's, 301 E. Michigan Ave. in George where he purchased it to have it validated before claiming the prize.
"As a joke I said, 'Can you cash this?' And she said, 'No.' She looked at it again and I thought she was going to faint!" Kruger said.
Kruger, who is a welder and part-time farmer, said he plans to share some of the winnings with his family and save the rest.
