DES MOINES, Iowa - A Colesburg man was traveling for work when he stopped to buy a "Crossword" instant-scratch ticket and ended up winning a top prize of $30,000.
Jason Steger, 39, was in Des Moines for his work as a taxidermist when he decided to stop at Kum & Go, 101 S.W. Army Post Road in Des Moines.
"When I scratched it off I thought I had nine words," Steger said. "After counting about the fifth time I realized I actually had ten!"
Steger said Crossword is one of his favorite scratch tickets because he's had friends win big playing the ticket in the past. He shared the big news with his family first.
"They didn't believe me at first, because I've played April Fool's jokes on them in the past," Steger said with a laugh as he claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Steger said once he convinced his wife that he was telling the truth, she was very excited for him. He said he's not quite sure what he'll do with his winnings yet.
"I'm going to put it in the bank and pay some bills for sure," he said.
