DES MOINES, Iowa - When a Cedar Falls woman decided to scratch her "Crossword" ticket before heading to bed, she discovered she'd won a top prize of $30,000 and didn't get much sleep.
Norma Petersen, 68, said she initially thought she'd won a $3,000 prize when she looked at her ticket.
"I woke up during the night and I thought, 'Did I really win?' So I looked at it again and I saw I won $30,000!" Petersen said.
Petersen thought she'd rather be safe than sorry, so she didn't even tell her husband, Donald, about the win until she took her ticket back to Hy-Vee, 4000 University Ave. in Waterloo to have it validated.
"He was pretty excited too," Petersen said. "He couldn't believe I could be that lucky."
Petersen said Crossword is one of her favorite games, but she never dreamed she'd win a top prize. She said she and Donald plan to use some of the winnings to renovate their home.
Petersen claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
