Lunch Trip To Maquoketa Leads To $10,000 Win

Luis Trevino Wins Top Prize Playing "Minute To Win It™" Scratch Game

Luis Trevino   Hear Luis tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - When an East Moline, Ill. man met his friend for lunch in Maquoketa, he never dreamed it would lead to him winning a top prize playing the Iowa Lottery's "Minute To Win It™" instant-scratch game.

Luis Trevino, 54, said he stopped for gas after lunch at Casey's, 104 Westgate Drive in Maquoketa, when he decided to buy a few tickets.

"I went to the car and was scratching the tickets off," Trevino said. "The fourth one was when I hit it."

Trevino took the ticket back into Casey's to have it validated.

"Sure enough, she gave me the verification slip," Trevino said. "I thought, 'Holy Toledo! Oh my goodness.'"

Trevino said he didn't get much sleep before claiming his prize March 19 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"I didn't want to lose the ticket, so I kept moving it around in the middle of the night," Trevino said with a laugh.

Trevino has shared the news with his wife, Connie, and said she was very excited for him.

"Last week we had a lot of bad luck. I got rear-ended and hit a deer with my rental so when I told Connie I said, 'I hope you're sitting down, but this is a good thing!'" he said.

Trevino, who is self-employed, said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills and he might set aside some funds for a trip.
