DES MOINES, Iowa - When a Cedar Rapids woman returned to the convenience store she purchased her "Super Crossword" at, she was expecting to claim a $500 prize; she was surprised when the cashier revealed she had won much more.
Cassie Martin, 27, said she scratched her ticket while pumping gas at Kwik Shop, 3301 J St. S.W. in Cedar Rapids and thought she'd won a $500 prize, but she'd actually won a top prize of $50,000.
"I walked in and said, 'I think I just won five hundred dollars,'" Martin said. "Then the machine said, 'processing ticket' and I just started jumping!"
Martin said it was hard to express how she was feeling when she discovered how much she'd won.
"I was counting zeros and was like, 'Oh my gosh, no!' It's hard to express how excited I was," she said.
Martin told her mom about the big news first.
"I don't know if she believed me because she works third shift and she was tired," Martin said with a laugh. "My boyfriend still doesn't believe me!"
Martin claimed her prize April 9 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids, just one hour after scratching the ticket. She said she was going to use her photo with a big ceremonial check as proof for those who don't believe her.
Martin, who is a personal house cleaner, said she plans to use some of her winnings for remodeling.
"I don't need much; I'm really happy, so I just think about it as a really big bonus," Martin said. "I plan to spoil my parents; they deserve the world.".
