DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa Falls woman admits her husband deserves some of the credit for her top prize win of $100,000 playing the lottery's "Red Hot Cherries" instant-scratch game, since he is the one who purchased the ticket.
Kim Newton, 55, said her husband, Jon, came home with a few scratch tickets he purchased at Handi Stop, 748 S. Oak St. in Iowa Falls and she decided to scratch one of them.
"I couldn't believe it," Newton said. "He was thrilled!"
Newton said luck must run in her family, because her niece and sister have both won lottery prizes of $30,000 in the past few months.
"Ever since then we've started trying our luck," Newton said.
Newton hadn't told her family yet when she claimed her prize at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City Monday.
"I'm sure I'll be the favorite now," Newton said with a laugh.
Newton said she and Jon plan to put their money into savings for now.
Newton claimed the last top prize in the Red Hot Cherries scratch game.
