DES MOINES, Iowa - A Spencer woman decided to check her Powerball ticket when she stopped for stamps and discovered she'd won a $10,000 prize in the May 12 drawing.
Mary Jane Moffitt, 49, said she sometimes wins two or three dollars, but never dreamed she'd win $10,000.
"I checked it on the self-check and I said to the lady, 'Will you double check this for me?'" Moffitt said. "She checked it and said, 'Oh my gosh, you won $10,000!'"
Moffitt said she became overwhelmed with emotion at the news.
"Store employees were coming over and I was crying and shaking by then," Moffitt said.
Moffitt joked that she almost forgot her stamps after hearing the news. She headed out to the car to tell her husband, Bruce.
"He said, 'What's the matter?' because I was still crying," Moffitt said. "I said, 'We just won ten thousand dollars!'"
Moffitt claimed her prize May 15 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake, just one day before her and Bruce's 30th wedding anniversary.
"I was very tickled," Moffitt said.
Moffitt, who is a Certified Nurse's Assistant, purchased her winning ticket at Casey's, 103 Central Ave. in Estherville. She said she plans to use some of her winnings to pay bills as well as take a vacation.
"I want to do something just for us," she said. "After 30 years we deserve to sit back and do something for us."
The winning numbers in the $80 million Powerball jackpot drawing on May 12 were 10-24-35-53-58 and Powerball 22. Moffitt won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had she added the Power Play® to her ticket, Moffitt would have multiplied her win to $40,000.
There was no jackpot prize winner in the May 12 drawing. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $110 million.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
