Hear Rodney tell his story.
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Waukon man's niece happened to be working when he purchased his "Pinball" instant-scratch ticket and won a top prize of $10,000.
Rodney Fink, 74, stopped into Kwik Star, 101 Rossville Road in Waukon to purchase a ticket and was happy to see his niece behind the counter.
"She said, 'Did you get a winner?' and I said, 'Yeah, kind of,'" Fink said with a laugh. "I showed her and she said, 'Oh, my gosh! You're the luckiest devil I've ever heard of.'"
Fink joked that he told his niece not to tell her mother about his win. He has since shared the news with family members and friends, and everyone is excited for him.
"I told the wife, and she didn't believe me at first," Fink said. "She said, 'Are you sure it's a winner?' And I said, 'Well, we'll find out here shortly!'"
Fink was busy on the job as a construction foreman for a couple of weeks after scratching his ticket, so he didn't claim his prize until Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City.
"I bought a pickup yesterday, so I'm thinking about spending this money on that," he said.
