DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids man said he was feeling lucky so he decided to buy a "$30,000 Club" scratch ticket and ended up winning a top prize of $30,000.
Anthony Schmidt, 47, said he stopped by Hawkeye Convenience Store, 2330 Wiley Blvd. in Cedar Rapids with his kids before school.
"I took them to school and they wanted to scratch them, but I said no because it was my lucky day," Schmidt said with a laugh.
Schmidt said all five of the scratch tickets he had purchased that morning were winners, but one was a much larger prize than the others.
"I got to work and I sat down at my desk because I was early," Schmidt said. "The second one was the $30,000 winner and I yelled."
Schmidt said a coworker heard his yell and came over to see what was going on.
"He came upstairs to see what I was yelling about. And we both looked at it to see if it was true. It was nice," he said.
Schmidt claimed his prize just an hour after scratching the ticket, on Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
"I called and told my wife," Schmidt said. "I told her she could have some new shoes."
Schmidt's wife, Nancy, couldn't believe what he had won. He said he's looking forward to telling the kids about his big win, too.
"I imagine our 13-year-old girl will have some ideas about how to spend it," Schmidt joked.
Schmidt is planning to use some of his winnings to pay for his son's college tuition. His son just graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a teaching degree.Return to top↑
