DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids man said he had to check his top prize-winning "Crossword" ticket almost ten times before he believed he'd won a $30,000 prize.
Walter Stout, 64, was alone at work, where he drives a forklift, when he discovered his prize.
"When the other guys showed up I told 'em I won thirty thousand and they didn't believe me," Stout said.
Stout said Crossword is his favorite ticket and he has been playing the game since its debut.
"My first thought was 'I can pay my house off,'" Stout said.
The first person Stout told outside of work was his wife, Denise. He said she didn't believe him right at first.
"She was pretty excited," he said.
Stout said he didn't even take the day off work to claim his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Kwik Shop, 1001 First Ave. S.W. in Cedar Rapids.
"It'll help get the house paid off and put more money in the bank when I retire," said Stout.Return to top↑
