DES MOINES, Iowa - An Emmetsburg man said his wife won't be needing to make a career change now that he's won a top prize of $50,000 playing the lottery's "Hot $50,000" instant-scratch game.
Colen Fjetland, 47, said his wife was planning to go back to her job as a traveling nurse to help make ends meet, but she'll get to keep her job close to home now that they've won this prize.
"I knew she was kind of upset about it, so the next day I bought her something to cheer her up and bought a lotto ticket at the same time," Fjetland said.
Before visiting his wife at work to surprise her, Fjetland scratched his ticket.
"I saw the five and then I saw the zero and thought, 'Okay, we'll have free pizza tonight,'" Fjetland said. "And then I saw the rest."
Fjetland said he took his wife, Sherry, for a walk to tell her the news.
"She started crying, because now she doesn't have to go out on the road. Ever since then I've been guarding this ticket with my life," Fjetland said as he claimed his prize June 4 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City. He purchased his ticket at Dyno's Amoco, 2401 Main St. in Emmetsburg.
Fjetland said he's usually a "Crossword" game player, and this was the first time he has ever played the Hot $50,000 game.
"It's just the right time in the right place, I guess," Fjetland said.
Fjetland said he plans to use some of his money to pay bills as well as help his kids in college and spoil his new grand baby.Return to top↑
