DES MOINES, Iowa - A Wenona, Ill. man was in Dyersville for a farm toy show when he decided to pick up a "Hot $50,000" instant-scratch ticket and won a top prize of $50,000.
Donald Jackson Jr. said he never dreamed his trip into Iowa would be so life altering.
"We were playing pull-tabs and I decided that wasn't for me so I bought a few Hot $50,000s," Jackson said. "I said, 'Okay, I'm not reading this right.'"
Jackson was with his friends at Quik & Handi, 725 Ninth St. S.E. in Dyersville when he scratched his ticket, so he had the clerk validate it for him.
"She scanned it and says, 'Oh my! Well, that's pretty nice!'" Jackson said.
Jackson said it was the first time he'd ever played the Hot $50,000 game, and he couldn't stop thinking about the weight of debt coming off his shoulders.
"I thought, 'Well, I just got out of debt.'" Jackson said.
He said his friends were excited for him, and were thinking of ways to help him spend the winnings. Jackson, who is a Department of Transportation highway maintainer in Illinois, claimed his prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.Return to top↑
