DES MOINES, Iowa - A Muscatine man, who has been playing lottery games most of his life, won a $10,000 prize playing the lottery's "Did I Win?" instant-scratch game.
Bud Hazelwood, 72, said he began playing lottery in Illinois before Iowa had a lottery; but when the Iowa Lottery was signed into law 27 years ago, he began playing in his home state.
"I thought, 'Jiminy crickets!'" Hazelwood said. "I've been buying tickets ever since they started in Illinois; I worked for Oscar Mayer in Davenport for 36 years."
Hazelwood said his son was with him when he discovered his prize.
"When I thought I had a winner I asked him if he'd go in and check it," Hazelwood said. "He did, and it was a big one!"
Hazelwood said this is the biggest prize he's ever won playing the lottery. He said he shared the news with both his sons first.
"He said, 'Let me see this!'" Hazelwood said.
Hazelwood purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 3509 Steamboat Way in Muscatine. He said he plans to take a vacation with his winnings.
He claimed his prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.Return to top↑
