Carroll Woman Wins First $100,000 Prize Playing New Scratch Game

Stacie Wiederien Wins Top Prize Playing the "Gemstone 10s" Scratch Game

Stacie Wiederien   Hear Stacie tell her story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Carroll woman's second try at the lottery's new "Gemstone 10s" instant-scratch game left her in disbelief when she realized she'd won the first top prize of $100,000.

Stacie Wiederien, 23, stopped into Carroll Country Store, 1511 N. Hwy. 71 in Carroll, where she happens to work, on her day off and decided to try the new game.

"I bought one and it was a loser, so I bought another one," Wiederien said. "I didn't play it; I just scratched the bottom and checked it myself and it was the big winner!"

After using the lottery's self-ticket checker, Wiederien asked the clerk to validate her ticket using the lottery's terminal.

"I didn't believe it at first, so I threw it at the girl who was working and told her she had to check it," Wiederien said with a laugh as she claimed her prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. "We both were jumping up and down and screaming."

Wiederien told another coworker her good news and then called her parents.

"My mom's reaction was, 'You're kidding me!'" she said.

Wiederien said she chose to play the Gemstone 10s ticket because she likes playing new games. She plans to use some of her winnings to purchase a newer vehicle as well as save some for her child's future.
