DES MOINES, Iowa - A Sioux Center man was scratching a "Roulette" ticket to pass the time over his lunch break when he discovered he' won a top prize of $30,000.
Michael Schenk, 40, said he sometimes plays scratch games while on break from his concrete construction job for something to do, but he never dreamed he'd win a top prize.
"While I was eating I was scratching it off and realized I had a $30,000 winner!" Schenk said. "I didn't realize it at first, so I took it up to the scanner and it said, 'Congratulations! $30,000 winner.'"
Schenk said he scanned the ticket at Cargo Express, 217 W. Third St. in Peterson using the lottery's self-checker several times in disbelief before he told a coworker about his win.
"The clerk at the counter didn't hardly believe it either," Schenk said.
Schenk said he knew he had a job to finish, so he locked the ticket in his pick-up truck and met the cement trucks to finish his day.
"I locked it in my pick-up so that no one would open it up or it wouldn't blow out the window or anything," Schenk said.
Schenk said he did attempt to call his wife, Shawn, to tell her about the win, but he couldn't reach her, so he decided to surprise her when he got home that night.
"I just handed her the ticket and said, 'Here, look at this,'" Schenk said. "It took her a minute to read it off and then she couldn't believe it either."
Schenk said he's still deciding on the plans for his winnings. He claimed his prize June 27 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake.Return to top↑
