DES MOINES, Iowa - A Council Bluffs man has become the latest winner in a stretch of lottery luck on Iowa's western border.

In less than a year, Council Bluffs has seen 20 winners of $10,000 or more; Earl Sapp is excited to be able to add another name to the list.

Sapp said he stopped by a local retailer to have his Hot Lotto tickets validated the day after the June 27 drawing, as he always does, and was surprised to hear how much he'd won.

"They ran it through and I saw I won $30,000," Sapp said.

Sapp had his ticket validated where he purchased it, at Hy-Vee Drugstore, 757 W. Broadway in Council Bluffs. He said he's a regular Hot Lotto player.

"I usually play a couple of my own picks and a few easy picks," Sapp said.

Sapp didn't stop to tell anyone about his big win; he came straight to the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs on June 28 to claim his prize.

"I'm going to get my money in my bank account before I decide on anything," Sapp said.

Sapp, 55, works for AmeriStar Casino in Council Bluffs as a dishwasher.

The winning numbers in the $3.43 million Hot Lotto jackpot drawing on June 27 were: 1-2-16-26-29 and Hot Ball 15. There was one jackpot winner in Indiana.

Hot Lotto players choose five numbers from a pool of 39 and another number, called the Hot Ball, from a pool of 19. The Hot Lotto jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until someone wins it. Tickets in the game cost $1. Hot Lotto drawings are held at about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, just before the Powerball drawings.

Players can multiply their non-jackpot prizes by three with the Hot Lotto Sizzler® option. The cost is $1 per play. Prizes are always tripled with the Hot Lotto Sizzler.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
