Springville Man Thinks $50,000 Lottery Prize Is A Hoax

Gary Parmenter Wins Top Prize Playing the "Super Crossword" Scratch Game

Gary Parmenter   Hear Gary tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Springville man said he literally did not believe he was the winner of a top prize of $50,000 playing the lottery's "Super Crossword" instant-scratch game.

Gary Parmenter, 45, said he was casually scratching a ticket while waiting for a pizza at Casey's, 605 Sixth St. S. in Springville when he discovered his prize.

"When I won I went over to the scanner thing and I thought it was a hoax," Parmenter said. "The lady behind the register said, 'What?' And I said, 'Well, according to this thing I won $50,000.' She scanned it and sure enough, it was."

Parmenter called his wife, Christy McCarty, to tell her the news.

"She didn't believe me at first either, so she had to talk to the lady behind the register too," Parmenter said with a laugh as he claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Parmenter, who works for the City of Cedar Rapids, said he hasn't yet made plans for his winnings.

"I can put it in the bank for a while," he said.
