Underwood Man Sees Big Win Coming

Roger Hough Wins Top Prize Playing the "Super Crossword" Scratch Game

Roger Hough   Hear Roger tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - An Underwood man said he could tell his "Super Crossword" was going to be a winner when he had five words halfway through scratching the ticket, but he never thought he'd win a top prize of $50,000.

Roger Hough, 55, said he stopped at U-Stop Convenience Shop, 1928 Sherwood Drive in Council Bluffs for an Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game ticket, but decided to buy a Super Crossword ticket as well.

"I thought, 'Well, this is going to be halfway decent,'" Hough said. "I got done and counted and counted and then counted again!"

Hough said the first person he told about the big win was his wife, Vicki.

"She got home and I said, 'Honey, we've got a problem. We're going to have to pay some taxes,'" Hough said with a laugh as he claimed his prize July 10 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.

Hough said Crossword is one of his favorite games, and he continues to keep playing.

"They take a while to do," he said.

Hough said he's planning to take Vicki on a vacation.

"She said, 'Well, I guess now you can buy me a lobster dinner… but it's going to have to be in Maine,'" he said.
