Tonia Budde Wins Top Prize Playing the "Gemstone 10s" Scratch Game

Tonia Budde   Hear Tonia tell her story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids woman said she and her husband got no sleep before claiming a $100,000 top prize she won playing the lottery's "Gemstone 10s" instant-scratch game.

Tonia Budde, 61, said her husband had a hard time believing the win the night she won it, but Budde was still in disbelief when she claimed her prize Aug. 9 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"My husband was in a bad state last night and I'm still in disbelief," she said.

Budde said she stopped to buy a couple Gemstone 10s tickets while she was at the grocery store and won $30. Later, she stopped at her favorite gas station, BP on First, 2824 First Ave. N.E. in Cedar Rapids and purchased the last ticket in the Gemstone 10s pack.

"I saved the last one to scratch in my car. I looked at that and went right back in to have them scan it!" she said.

Budde said she couldn't wait to get home after discovering she'd won a $100,000 prize.

"I really didn't think anything but, 'Just get home!'" she said. "[My husband] kept telling me it wasn't real!"

Budde said she's had good luck on the Gemstone 10s ticket since it debuted and she enjoys playing the game. She works at Carlos O'Kelly's in Marion.

"I'm glad I tried it two more times!" she said.

Budde said she plans to use some of her winnings to pay bills as well put a down payment on a house.
