DES MOINES, Iowa - A Belmond man said he had a hard time sleeping, even after working third shift, when he found out he won a top prize of $100,000 playing "Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game."
John Cole, 43, had just finished his shift as an assistant manager at Kum & Go in Belmond at 2 a.m. when he decided to check his Cash Game numbers.
"I checked my ticket thinking I might win a buck," he said. "It's been nuts since two."
Cole immediately called his wife, Lisa, to tell her the news, even though she was half asleep.
"[She said], 'You're lying to me!'" Cole said.
Cole hadn't been to bed when he claimed his prize Aug. 21 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City. He purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 112 River Ave. S. in Belmond.
He said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay off student loans. His wife also hopes to get some new windows for her home.
"She said something about windows and cutting up the credit cards," Cole said with a laugh.
Cole matched all five numbers in the Cash Game drawing on Aug. 20 to win the top prize. The winning numbers for the drawing on Aug. 20 were: 1-3-7-9-35.
