DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dyersville man won a $10,000 Powerball prize in the Aug. 8 drawing using the numbers from his families' birthdays.

Paul Oberbroeckling, 45, matched five of the six numbers drawn to win a $10,000 prize. He discovered his win by using the lottery's self-check devices available in retail locations.

"I wasn't expecting it," Oberbroeckling said. "I was shocked."

Oberbroeckling purchased his ticket at the end of July for future drawings. He said it was a scary thought to realize he'd been carrying around a ticket worth $10,000 for a month. He called his wife, Susan, to tell her the news.

"She was very excited," he said. "She said, 'You're kidding me!' But I showed her the ticket."

Oberbroeckling, who drives a semi-truck for a living, called and told his other family members, who were all excited for him. He said he plans to take some time to think about how to use his winnings.

"I don't want to do something too quick," he said.

Oberbroeckling claimed his prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Kwik Stop, 740 18th Ave. S.W. in Dyersville.

The winning numbers in the $216.8 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Aug. 8 were 3-7-11-15-28 and Powerball 12. Oberbroeckling won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, Oberbroeckling would have multiplied his win to $40,000.

There was no jackpot prize winner in the Aug. 8 drawing.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
