Donna Mollenhauer Wins Top Prize Playing the "Hot $50,000" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Linn County woman is celebrating her big lottery win, but says she appreciates the health news that her sister recently received even more.
Donna Mollenhauer, 64, of Toddville, won the top prize in the "Hot $50,000" instant-scratch game, claiming her $50,000 prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. Mollenhauer said that one of the first people she called to share the news with was her sister who lives in Arkansas, who was awaiting a call with health test results. It turns out they both had reason to celebrate.
"She didn't have cancer and I won $50,000," Mollenhauer said. "Happy day, you're not kidding! Super-good day. Her news was better than mine."
Mollenhauer has had good luck playing Iowa Lottery games. In September 2010, she won a $250,000 prize playing the "Bingo Times 10" instant-scratch game, while in January 2006 she won a $21,000 prize in the "Double Blackjack" instant-scratch game. Mollenhauer jokes that she's working her way up to winning the Powerball® jackpot.
Mollenhauer said she bought her winning ticket at Kwik Shop, 301 E. Blairs Ferry Road in Hiawatha. She asked the clerk to scan the ticket to confirm her win, then took her winning ticket and the receipt from the store home and played a little joke on her husband, George.
"I went home and told my husband that I found a piece of paper on the ground that showed somebody had won $50,000," she said with a laugh. "And then I got around to telling him that it was me who had won the $50,000."
Mollenhauer said they will use some of her winnings for a trip to Arkansas to visit her sister, spoiling their family during the holidays and putting some of the money into a college fund for their grandchildren.
"It will be a nice Christmas!" she said.Return to top↑
