DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque man was lucky he didn't spill hot coffee all over himself when he discovered he'd won a top prize of $10,000 playing the lottery's "Scrabble™" instant-scratch game.

Edward Barud, 82, said he used his dog's identification tag from last year to scratch the ticket.

"I scratched the top letter, I think it was a "W" and I said 'Oh my gosh, I got a W,'" Barud said. "So then I took this W and I scratched underneath."

When Barud revealed the $10,000 win on his ticket, he called his daughter and shared the news with her about his big win.

"I told her it was worth $10,000!" Barud said. "She said, 'Dad, I'm really happy for you.'"

Barud was very excited and maybe a bit shaky as he claimed his prize Sept. 25 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"We came down with my son-in-law and daughter," Barud explained. "He wouldn't let me drive. So he's driving my car but I don't think he trusts my driving."

Barud purchased his winning ticket at Kwik Star, 2685 Dodge St. in Dubuque. He said he plans to put his winnings into savings for now. "I'm not lacking for anything. I'm one of those guys that's got everything. In fact I've even got my health which is more important than anything to me," he said.

Barud said he might even buy his dog a few extra bones.
