$10,000 Prize Has Hudson Man Thinking He Broke The Lottery Machine

Bill Daringer Wins $10,000 Prize in Sept. 29 Powerball® Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - When a Hudson man used one of the lottery's self-check machines to validate his Powerball tickets and saw he'd won a $10,000 prize, he was convinced the machine was broken.

Bill Daringer, 59, said he stopped at Kwik Star, 1636 W. Fourth St. in Waterloo where he purchased his tickets just to check them and couldn't believe what he saw.

"It said, 'Congratulations! You're a $10,000 winner!' And I just stood there in shock and my mouth dropped," Daringer said.

Daringer said the clerks at Kwik Star know him well, so they were able to help him out.

"I said to the girl, 'I think something's wrong with your machine,'" Daringer said. "She said, 'Why?' I said, 'It just told me that I won $10,000!'"

The clerk thought he was joking with her, but asked him to hand her the ticket so she could validate it using the lottery terminal.

"All of a sudden it spit out this big, long claim form," Daringer said. "She said, 'Oh my gosh, it did!' I was real tickled."

Daringer drove right over to his daughter's house to tell her the news.

"She thought I was pulling her leg," he said. "And then I pulled out my claim form and she said, 'Oh my gosh, Dad!'"

Daringer, who is disabled, said he hasn't been able to go on a vacation in years, so he's thinking about going somewhere warm.

"I'm just excited," Daringer said. "It finally has hit me, maybe my lucks going to start changing."

Daringer claimed his prize Oct. 1 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

The winning numbers in the $40 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Sept. 29 were 14-18-28-29-57 and Powerball 8. Daringer won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball on his Easy Pick ticket. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, Daringer would have multiplied his win to $40,000.

There was no jackpot prize winner in the Sept. 29 drawing. The estimated jackpot for Wednesday's drawing is $50 million.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
