Laurie Kelly Wins Top Prize of $30,000 Playing the "Holiday Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids woman's favorite football team may have lost on Monday, but she won - big.
Laurie Kelly, 46, said she likes to scratch her tickets at half-time during football games because she thinks it brings her luck. She was right this time; she won a top prize of $30,000 playing the lottery's "Holiday Crossword" instant-scratch game.
"They were losing, my Jets. So I thought, 'Oh, I got lottery tickets. I'm going to scratch them off,'" Kelly said. "I started scratching and letters kept popping up."
Kelly's husband, Rory, was on the couch when she discovered her prize.
"We went over the words down and across five times to make sure we had all the letters and all the words," she said. "And sure enough, that's how we won it!"
Kelly had her ticket validated at Hawkeye Convenience Store, 2330 Wiley Blvd. in Cedar Rapids where she purchased it.
"They went and brought the boss out, the manager, and she couldn't believe it," Kelly said. "And she said, 'Congratulations!' I said, 'Thank you.' It's very exciting."
Kelly, who works at Whirlpool Amana Division as an assembler, claimed her prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She said she plans to save her money for now, and is planning a vacation for this summer.Return to top↑
