DES MOINES, Iowa - A Carthage, Mo. man and his wife decided to stop while on their way to see family in Iowa and ended up winning a top prize of $50,000 playing the lottery's "Holiday Black" instant-scratch ticket.
Kevin Baldwin, 27, said he enjoys playing scratch tickets and was having fun trying Iowa tickets. He said he and his wife, Sabrina, stopped a few times on their route to see family.
"I'm a $2 ticket kind of guy and she kind of pointed it out," Baldwin said.
Baldwin said he and Sabrina were unsure of the win since they'd never seen a top-prize winner before.
"We're like, $5, $10 here, maybe $100 but that's about as high as we usually get," Sabrina said.
Baldwin, who works at Schreiber Foods Inc. in Carthage, said he looked over the ticket several times before traveling to the Iowa Lottery's headquarters office in Des Moines on Oct. 10.
"I kept reading the bottom to make sure there was no kind of little gimmick," he said.
Baldwin said the win still hadn't set in yet.He purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 110 S. D St. in Oskaloosa. He and Sabrina said they don't have any plans for their winnings just yet.
"We're still trying to take it in that we won it," Sabrina said.
