McGregor Man Thinks His Eyes Are Playing Tricks On Him

Richard Pettit Wins $10,000 Prize in Oct. 6 Hot Lotto® Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A McGregor man said when he saw he'd matched most of the number in the Oct. 6 Hot Lotto drawing he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him.

Richard Pettit, 69, said he usually checks his tickets at a retail location the day after the drawings, but got busy that day and had to look up the numbers online instead.

"I always start on the right-hand side to see if I had, like, the Hot Ball, you know what I mean?" Pettit said. "I didn't have that. I started on the white numbers and I kept going and I had all five! I couldn't believe it!"

Pettit, who is retired, said he has enjoyed playing Hot Lotto since the game debuted in Iowa in 2002. He won the prize playing his own numbers.

"I picked them like three years ago. I play other numbers too, our birth dates, but these here, now, I made 'em up, like I said, about three years ago and I've been playing them," he said. "They were numbers I thought, 'Well, maybe they'll hit.' I guess they did!"

Pettit said he was in no hurry to claim his prize but his wife, Diane, urged him to visit a lottery office. He claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"She was excited about it," he said. "Like I said, she's different than me. I was going to even leave it go a little longer and she kind of gets biting at the bit, wants to get something done!"

Pettit said they have told their three children and some of their friends.

"[The children] probably couldn't believe it, you know, believe that I won that much," he said.

Pettit said he's planning to use some of his winnings to pay off a loan, help out their children and splurge a bit on something for himself and Diane.

Pettit's $10,000 winning ticket came close to winning it all in the Oct. 6 drawing, matching the first five numbers but missing the Hot Ball. The winning numbers in the $3.16 million Hot Lotto jackpot drawing that night were: 4-5-13-18-25 and Hot Ball 2.

Players can multiply their non-jackpot prizes by three by purchasing the Hot Lotto with Sizzler option. The cost is $1 per play. Had Pettit added the Hot Lotto with Sizzler option to his ticket, he would have tripled his prize to $30,000.

Hot Lotto players choose five numbers from a pool of 39 and another number, called the Hot Ball, from a pool of 19. The Hot Lotto jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until someone wins it. Tickets in the game cost $1. Hot Lotto drawings are held at about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, just before the Powerball drawings.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
