DES MOINES, Iowa - A Clinton man said the day couldn't get any better after discovering he won a $30,000 prize playing the lottery's "Holiday Crossword" instant-scratch game on his wedding anniversary.

Terrance Cavanagh, 71, said he was passing the time while his wife was at the dentist by scratching a few lottery tickets, but he wasn't expecting to win a top prize.

"It was raining; I just sat in there and scratched them off and there was thirty thousand dollars," Cavanagh said.

Cavanagh claimed his prize Monday, the same day he won it, at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Cavanagh tried to call his wife, Jacky, to tell her the good news but she was still in the dentist's office. He was able to share the news with his children.

"I've got three children and my grandkids and I just called them all," he said. "They said, 'It's not for real.' I said, 'Yes it is.'"

Cavanagh, who is retired, purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 1107 13th Ave. N. in Clinton. He and Jacky were celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary.

The couple had already planned a trip to Las Vegas for their anniversary, so Cavanagh said the winnings will just enhance that trip.

"We're leaving in the morning, we were leaving for Las Vegas," he said.
