Craig Spencer Wins $10,000 Prize in Sept. 29 Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Marshalltown man sat down to check his Powerball numbers for the Sept. 29 drawing on his birthday and discovered he'd won a $10,000 prize.
Craig Spencer, who celebrated his 72nd birthday Sept. 30, said he had a pretty good birthday after having that kind of news to share.
"I started checking my numbers and found out I had four right and the Powerball," Spencer said. "I went in, my wife was laying down on the couch and I went in and told her, 'Well, we're going to have to take a road trip.'"
Spencer said he had a hard time convincing his wife, Carol, he had read the right prize amount when he checked his numbers.
"I said, 'I just won $10,000.' And she said, 'What? Do you mean a thousand?'" Spencer said. "And I said, 'No, ten thousand!'"
Spencer, who is retired, said he only shared the news with his daughter-in-law before claiming his prize Oct. 19 at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.
"I got it from the Marshalltown Hy-Vee Drugtown and I go in there and buy my Powerball tickets and they have a big sign up underneath that says, 'You better check your tickets because somebody won a ten thousand dollar one,'" Spencer said with a laugh.
Spencer purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee Drugstore, 1712 S. Center St. in Marshalltown. He said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills as well as purchase a new washing machine.
The winning numbers in the $40 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Sept. 29 were 14-18-28-29-57 and Powerball 8. Spencer won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball on his easy-pick ticket. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, Spencer would have multiplied his win to $40,000.
There was no jackpot prize winner in the Sept. 29 drawing. Saturday's estimated jackpot is $100 million.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
