'Midtown 5' Wins $10,000 Prize in Oct. 10 Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A group of four coworkers and one of their customers from the Iowa City area are sharing a $10,000 prize from the Oct. 10 Powerball drawing.
Jamie Ferrell of Tipton, who was the spokesperson for the group, said overall the five members of the 'Midtown 5' have been playing together for nearly 10 years.
"I just let the tickets kind of pile up so the win was from October 10 actually," Ferrell said as she and one other group member claimed the prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
The group is comprised of four employees of the Midtown Family Restaurant in Iowa City and one of their regular customers. Ferrell is usually the person to purchase and check the tickets on behalf of the group, so she got the privilege of spreading the good news.
"Took the ticket down to the Suburban and checked them there on the side, on the little handy machine where you can check them yourself or whatever," Ferrell said. "And the first ticket said four bucks and the second one said ten thousand and I thought it was an error."
Ferrell validated the ticket where she purchased it, at the Suburban Amoco, 370 Scott Court in Iowa City. She was able to tell two of the group members right away.
"I got to work and I grabbed the two people that were there working - my best friends from school, my manager there at the restaurant and my boss, Kenny. And told them we all won $10,000 between the five of us," Ferrell said.
Ferrell said a few of the members didn't believe her, but one person, Nichole Ramsey, knew she wasn't joking.
"Nikki knew I was telling the truth because my hands were shaking," Ferrell said.
The members of the Midtown 5 include: Ferrell; Denise Rohwedder, Iowa City; Richard Paulsen, West Branch; Kenneth Cariens Jr., Coralville; and Ramsey, Cedar Rapids.
Ferrell said she's thinking about taking a trip to Las Vegas with her winnings. She said other members mentioned paying bills and purchasing holiday gifts.
"We already bought our next tickets!" she said.
The winning numbers in the $50 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Oct. 10 were 18-26-29-35-43 and Powerball 28. The group won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball on their easy-pick ticket. Had they added the Power Play® to their ticket, they would have multiplied their win to $40,000.
There was no jackpot prize winner in the Oct. 10 drawing. Saturday's estimated jackpot is $100 million.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
