'Heinz 19' Group Wins Big Prize in Oct. 24 Powerball® Drawing

Ha Hoang representing the Heinz 19   Hear Ha tell their story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - Another group of Iowa co-workers has won big playing Powerball.

Nineteen co-workers from the Muscatine area calling themselves the 'Heinz 19' have claimed a $10,000 Powerball prize. All members of the group work at Muscatine's H.J. Heinz Co. plant, which produces ketchup, mustard, gravy and steak and Worcestershire sauce.

Ha Hoang, 45, of Muscatine claimed the prize on behalf of the group Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"We've been playing for like, a while, you know, like, a few years," she said. "Last time we won just like $100!"

Hoang is in charge of buying the tickets for her group and was the one who discovered its prize. The winning ticket was purchased at Giri BP, 1006 N. Columbus St. in West Liberty.

"I think on Thursday, I was just doing whatever, you know, the cooking and stuff and said, 'I'm going to check the numbers,'" she said. "And then so, I checked the Powerball. I was like, 'Oh, we got the Powerball,' you know. And then I checked and then said, 'Oh, we got one, we got two. Oh, my gosh, we got four! Oh, we missed one number!'"

Hoang asked her husband to verify she was seeing the numbers correctly and then had fun sharing the news with her co-workers.

"I said, 'You guys ready to go to Des Moines?'" she said. "And then they were like, 'For what? For what?' I said, 'We won something!'"

Hoang said the entire group was really excited to hear about the win.

The members of the 'Heinz 19' are: Hoang; Salley Beinke and Joe D. Faison, both of Davenport; Laurie Plowman Black and David Plowman, both of Letts; Josefina Calderon, Scott Orr, Josephine Shay, Ricardo Castillo, Juan Lopez, Luis Saucedo Jr., Horacio Marquez Jr., Teri Lyon, Rodney Ewalt, Carlos Chavez, Bonnie Crain, and Dennis William, all of Muscatine; Lupe Enriquez of Wapello; and Tirena Paca of New Boston, Ill.

Hoang said most of the members will be saving their portions of the winnings for the holidays.

"I'm excited for them," she said.

The winning numbers in the $90 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Oct. 24 were 3-18-21-23-50 and Powerball 4. The group won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball on its easy-pick ticket. Had they added the Power Play® to their ticket, they would have multiplied their win to $40,000.

There was no jackpot prize winner in the Oct. 24 drawing. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $143 million.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
