Delaware County Man Takes Unexpected Day Off Work

Robert Hutchinson Wins Top Prize of $100,000 Playing the "Gemstone 10s" Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Delaware County man wasn't expecting to take a day off work to claim a top prize of $100,000 on the lottery's "Gemstone 10s" instant-scratch game, but that's exactly what happened to him Tuesday.

Robert Hutchinson, 48, stopped to pick up a bag of chips for his lunch Tuesday morning; while he was there, he also picked up a Gemstone 10s ticket.

"Went out to the truck and scratched it and sure enough, it was a $100,000 winner," Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson said he immediately called his boss at Railway in Cascade where he is a welder to tell him he wouldn't be in. Then he called his wife, Brenda, to tell her the news.

"She didn't answer, I just left her a message," Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson, who is from Greeley, was home before Brenda could listen to his message, but he told her they needed to head to Cedar Rapids.

"She was pretty tickled," he said.

Hutchinson claimed his prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Quik & Handi, 725 Ninth St. S.E. in Dyersville.

Hutchinson said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills as well as spoil his grandkids during the holidays.
