DES MOINES, Iowa - A Waterloo woman may not have had the best luck catching her dinner while out fishing with her son, but she did come home with a top prize of $50,000 on the lottery's "Peppermint Super Crossword" instant-scratch game.

Kathy Schmidt, 50, said she took a break from fishing to scratch her ticket and couldn't believe what she saw.

"I kept scratching and I kept matching these words and was like, 'Oh my gosh, I think I won $5,000,'" Schmidt said. "And then when I recounted it it's like, 'Oh, I think I won $50,000!'"

Schmidt checked and re-checked her ticket to make sure she wasn't seeing things before telling her son they needed to head home.

"I told my son, 'We gotta go, I think I won big!'" she said.

Schmidt purchased her winning ticket at Hometown Foods, 1010 Mitchell Ave. in Waterloo. She called her parents to tell them the big news.

"They couldn't believe it. They didn't believe me at first until I showed them the big printout sheet I got from the retailer," Schmidt said.

Schmidt, who is a Certified Medical Assistant at Cedar Valley Medical Center in Waterloo, claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She said she plans to use some of her winnings to pay student loans.
