DES MOINES, Iowa - A Waterloo woman went out to rent a movie and purchase an instant-scratch ticket that ended up winning a top prize of $50,000.

Janelle Rench, 50, said she rarely shops at Kum & Go, 1976 Franklin St. in Waterloo, but she stopped there to rent a movie and pick up an "Aces High" scratch ticket.

"Scratched it off and just started crying," Rench said. "I mean, we just couldn't believe it!"

Rench said the win will make for a great holiday for her and her husband, John.

"Merry Christmas to us!" she said.

Rench said she had never played a scratch game before, but John likes them so she decided to try it.

"Earlier this year, it's kind of ironic, we won a thousand dollars and we were all excited about that," she said. "And so here we win a big one!"

Rench said she has shared the news with her family and friends, who were all shocked but very happy for her. She claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Rench, who is an office manager for a radio station in Waterloo, said she and John are planning to get newer vehicles and spoil their grandchildren during the holidays.
