Hardin County Woman Buys First Powerball® Ticket Ever And Wins $40,000 Prize

Erika Ramirez Wins Big Prize in Nov. 28 Monster Powerball Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Hardin County woman and her husband couldn't believe it when they saw five out of six of their Powerball numbers come up on the television screen.

Erika Ramirez, 37, bought a ticket for the game-record jackpot drawing on Nov. 28, but never expected that ticket would win her a $40,000 prize.

"Last night [my husband] was watching the TV and he compared the numbers and the ticket and we decided to go this morning, earlier this morning, and they told us that we were the winners," Ramirez said as she claimed her prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City.

Ramirez said she purchased her very first Powerball ticket ever because of the $587.5 million record jackpot amount.

"I was so excited and I was, I don't know, trying to understand that it was real," she said. "I couldn't believe it."

Ramirez, who is from Alden, works at Berry Plastics in Iowa Falls. She joked that she wanted to spend her money on shoes and a big closet, but said she hasn't made any definite plans for her winnings yet.

"I just can't believe it. It's one in millions and that ticket was mine," she said.

The winning numbers in the $587.5 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Nov. 28 were 5-16-22-23-29 and Powerball 6. Ramirez won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Because she added the Power Play® to her ticket, she multiplied her win to $40,000.

There were two tickets that split the monster jackpot prize on Nov. 28, one in Arizona and one in Missouri. Saturday's estimated Powerball jackpot is $40 million.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
