Marcia Byrd Wins $40,000 Prize in Nov. 28 Monster Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Rock Island, Ill. woman was excited to see her lucky number popped up on her Powerball ticket from the Nov. 28 record jackpot drawing which helped her to win a $40,000 prize.
Marcia Byrd, 29, stopped at Lund's 66, 975 Spruce Hills Drive in Bettendorf just 20 minutes before the end of ticket sales for the $587.5 million jackpot drawing.
"I saw that the Powerball, like on my ticket, was six and that's my lucky number and I'm like, 'Oh, that's awesome!'" Byrd said.
Byrd's husband, Leo, was checking their ticket numbers after the drawing that night and saw that she had matched quite a few numbers on her ticket.
"He's like, 'Oh, you matched four [numbers] and the Powerball.' He said, 'We were so close!'" Byrd said. "I said, 'Well you still usually win like a couple hundred dollars if you match a few numbers.' I said, 'Let's look online.'"
When Byrd checked the Iowa Lottery's website, she discovered she'd won much more than just a couple hundred dollars.
"So we looked online and we saw that it said ten thousand!" she said. "And I was like, 'Oh my gosh, we won ten thousand dollars!' Then I looked at the next column, which is where the Power Play® was, because like I said we purchased the Power Play, and I was like, 'Oh my goodness, we won $40,000!' I couldn't even believe it."
Byrd, who is a stay-at-home mom to two daughters, said this was the first time she had purchased the Power Play for her ticket.
"It's pretty awesome. For a dollar more, you can't beat that," she said.
Byrd won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Because she added the Power Play to her ticket, she multiplied her win to $40,000.
She claimed her prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She said she's planning to pay some bills as well as celebrate her 30th birthday in February.
"It would be nice to maybe take a small vacation to celebrate my 30th birthday," she said.
The winning numbers in the $587.5 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Nov. 28 were 5-16-22-23-29 and Powerball 6.
There were two tickets that split the monster jackpot prize on Nov. 28, one in Arizona and one in Missouri. Saturday's estimated jackpot is $40 million.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
