Major Powerball Prize Is On The Line For Wednesday's Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - All eyes are on the Powerball jackpot as it climbs. The jackpot was raised another $25 million today, pushing it to an estimated $425 million for Wednesday's drawing. And while it may not be in record territory yet, if it rolls after Wednesday's drawing, that could all change.
"Twenty-five million dollars by itself is a jackpot amount," said Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich. "But adding it to the 400 million makes it even more spectacular."
The largest Powerball jackpot to date of $590.5 million was claimed on May 18 by Gloria Mackenzie of Florida. Topping that record for the Powerball game is the largest jackpot in American lottery history and worldwide of $656 million set by the Mega Millions® game for the March 30, 2012 drawing. There were three winning jackpot tickets for that drawing; one each in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.
Strong sales across the country are the reason the prize is taking big jumps now. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is about $118 million higher than the $307.3 million prize that was up for grabs in Saturday's drawing.
"The noise of a Powerball jackpot rocketing to $425 million will grab people's attention in every city and town across the country and bring them out to play," said Tom Romero, chairman of the Multi-State Lottery Association's Powerball Group and CEO of the New Mexico Lottery. "More importantly, the revenue from their ticket purchases will empower many worthy causes to accomplish even greater things on behalf of the communities they serve."
The Powerball jackpot was last won in the drawing on June 22, so it has been growing for more than six weeks. The cut-off for ticket sales for Wednesday's drawing is at 8:59 p.m. the day of the drawing.
Players are encouraged to sign the back of their tickets and to keep them in a safe place. The lottery also suggests that jackpot winners should seek financial and legal advice as they make plans to enjoy their new winning experience.
"And don't forget to check your ticket for other prizes," said Rich. "In addition to the jackpot, there are eight other prize levels in Powerball, ranging from $4 for matching just the Powerball up to $2 million for matching the first five numbers with the Power Play®."
