DES MOINES, Iowa - A Sioux City man thought he had won a $300 prize on his "Holiday Crossword" instant-scratch ticket until a few friends double-checked it and let him know he had actually won a top prize of $30,000.

Cody Owings, 26, was sitting in his car before starting work at Wilson Trailers in Sioux City when he scratched the ticket.

"My other friend checked it again and it turns out I was missing another letter, which was $30,000," Owings said.

After realizing he'd won much more than the $300 prize he initially thought he had, Owings couldn't hold back his emotions.

"I was shaking," he said. "I could not stop myself."

Owings claimed his prize Dec. 21 at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. His girlfriend, Allison Jaynes, had his ticket validated before claiming it because she didn't believe the news.

"She did not believe me. She called me a liar," Owings said. "Then she told me if I was lying she would punch me in my face!"

Owings purchased his winning ticket at Pilot Travel Center, 2815 Singing Hills Blvd. in Sioux City. He plans to use some of his winnings to purchase a home.
