Maquoketa Woman Celebrates Engagement By Winning $30,000 Prize

Joey Reid Wins Top Prize Playing the "Holiday Crossword" Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - After getting engaged on Christmas Eve, a Maquoketa woman's good news continued when she won a top prize of $30,000 playing the lottery's "Holiday Crossword" instant-scratch game.

Joey Reid, 42, said she and her fiancé, John Elkins, were on their way out-of-town to go on vacation with her family when they had to pull off the road to help her parents with their vehicle. They happened to pull into Kwik Stop Food Mart, 2320 Gateway Drive in Dubuque, where Reid purchased her ticket.

"The lady in line in front of us had just purchased five of the Holiday Crosswords so while we were standing in line I said, 'Oh, let's get some of those too!'" Reid said.

But Reid didn't scratch her ticket right away; in fact, she didn't scratch it until they returned home to Maquoketa five days later.

"We're sitting there at the table with the two younger kids and scratching away," Reid said. "Just couldn't believe it."

Reid said she and Elkins celebrated by jumping up and down, screaming and visiting her parents.

"It's something we'll never forget, that's for sure," she said.

Reid, who works at a factory that produces car air fresheners in De Witt, claimed her prize Jan. 4 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She is planning to share some of her winnings with their children.
