Ray Sears Wins Big Prize in Jan. 2 Hot Lotto® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - When a Pleasant Hill man stopped in to his favorite retailer to purchase more Hot Lotto tickets, he came out with news that he'd won a $10,000 prize in the Jan. 2 drawing.
Ray Sears, 65, said he usually just has his tickets validated when he stops to purchase a few more tickets.
"The Casey's ladies were really thrilled," Sears said.
Because he was in such disbelief, Sears took the ticket back to Hy-Vee, 4815 Maple Drive in Pleasant Hill where he purchased it to have it validated there as well.
Sears and his wife, Jan, plan to share some of the winnings with their children.
"We're both retired, so we're just going to do what we want with it," he said.
Sears claimed his prize Jan. 7 at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.
Sears' $10,000 winning ticket came close to winning it all in the Jan. 2 drawing, matching the first five numbers but missing the Hot Ball. The winning numbers in the $8.47 million Hot Lotto jackpot drawing that night were: 2-15-21-29-36 and Hot Ball 5.
Players can multiply their non-jackpot prizes by three by purchasing the Hot Lotto with Sizzler option. The cost is $1 per play. Had Sears added the Sizzler to his ticket, he would have multiplied his win to $30,000.
Hot Lotto players choose five numbers from a pool of 39 and another number, called the Hot Ball, from a pool of 19. The Hot Lotto jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until someone wins it. Tickets in the game cost $1. Hot Lotto drawings are held at about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, just before the Powerball® drawings.
There was no jackpot winner in the Jan. 2 drawing. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $1 million.
