"Chevy 10" Wins Big Prize in Jan. 16 Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A group of 10 coworkers from Bob Brown Chevrolet® in Des Moines pooled their money together and won a $40,000 Powerball prize in the Jan. 16 drawing.
William Cox, 62, claimed the prize on behalf of the group Jan. 17 at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. He said he's been purchasing the tickets for the group, who's calling themselves the "Chevy 10," for the past three years. He purchased the group's winning ticket at Kum & Go, 8600 Meredith Drive in Urbandale.
"All the pressure's on me," Cox said with a laugh.
Cox who is from Urbandale said the group is comprised mostly of auto technicians from the Chevy dealer, but there are also salesmen who play. Cox said he's glad they decided to add the Power Play® option to their tickets.
"It really paid off on this account!" Cox said.
Cox discovered the group's win the next morning after the drawing.
"I just about went to my knees," Cox said. "I knew I had the Powerball and I seen the first number, I knew I had the nine and the Powerball, then the 35. I took a couple double-takes and right down the line, as I got to the third number the knees started shaking and then the fourth number I about had to hold onto something."
Cox said the news spread fast through the dealership.
"They said, 'Seriously? Seriously?' That's all I heard all day," he said.
Cox said members of the group are talking of taking some mini-vacations with their winnings.
The following is a list of the other nine members of the Chevy 10:
From Des Moines: Ross Breed, Craig Long and Don Modlin.
In addition, there were individual winners of the group from these communities: Rodney Schwenneker of Adair; Don Maxwell of Baxter; Donald Stone of Minburn; Ron Allen of Ogden; Jeff Comes of Urbandale; and John Puckett of West Des Moines.
The winning numbers in the $90 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Jan. 16 were 9-21-28-32-51 and Powerball 35. The group won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Because they added the Power Play to their ticket, the group won a $40,000 prize.
There were no jackpot winners in the Jan. 16 Powerball drawing. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $50 million.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
