Anamosa Woman Excited Over $10,000 Lottery Prize

Shelley Plotz Wins Big Prize in Wednesday's Powerball® Drawing

Shelly Plotz   Hear Shelley tell her story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - An Anamosa woman casually had her Powerball ticket validated after the drawing on Wednesday and was not expecting to win a $10,000 prize.

Shelley Plotz, 31, said she couldn't believe it when a coworker at Hy-Vee Gas in Marion validated her ticket and told her she had won a $10,000 prize.

"I just couldn't believe it," Plotz said.

Plotz said she thought her coworker was joking with her because she's not usually a lucky person.

"I was like, 'Whatever, no way,'" she said.

Plotz called her fiancé, Jason Geltz, to tell him the big news early on Friday morning before claiming her prize at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"He was like, 'No way, you're kidding,'" Plotz said.

Plotz purchased her winning ticket at Hy-Vee Gas, 3550 Iowa Highway 151 E. in Marion. She said she's still considering how to spend her winnings.

"We have three kids, we just have a newborn, so the wedding is probably on hold for a while," she said. "So maybe we'll renovate our house."

The winning numbers in the $217.2 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Wednesday were 5-27-36-38-41 and Powerball 12. Plotz won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had she added the Power Play® to her ticket, Plotz would have multiplied her win to $40,000.

There was one winning jackpot ticket sold in Virginia that night. This Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $50 million.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
